WHO IS CHALT?

CHALT is a 100+ member group of civic-minded active community supporters who want to set a new direction for leadership in Chapel Hill.

We’ve been advocates for change in our community that improves our community. The CHALT steering committee organize meetings, events, policy discussions, reach out and meet with experts, as well as meet with citizens who need help navigating town government.

We are residents from a variety of local communities and backgrounds who strive to collaborate with, and assist, our leaders to bring neighborhood concerns and constituent issues to the Town Council for evaluation and resolution. We promote efforts and policies that nurture the continued growth of diversity and inclusivity in all facets of town government. We believe that conservation and development are complementary goals.

2023 Steering Committee Members: Linda Brown, Tom Henkel, Charles Humble, Virginia Gray, Julie McClintock, Sandy Turbeville, and Gordon Whitaker. To reach any one or all of us, send an email to info@chalt.org.

One of our most satisfying activities is to help residents make local government work for them. If your neighborhood has a municipal issue contact us at info@chalt.org. To bring a concern to a CHALT meeting, please email the same address.

CHALT advocates for:

  • Equitable, sustainable and fiscally sound development
  • Engagement of citizens — especially marginalized communities
  • Informed data-based decision-making and responsive leadership to manage Chapel Hill’s growth
  • Policies that create permanently affordable mixed income for sale and rental housing at various price points throughout Chapel Hill
  • Polices that support local small businesses
  • Hold local government accountable for town policies
  • Environmental stewardship that contributes to a rapid and drastic reduction our town’s carbon footprint
  • Transportation infrastructure that meets the need of all citizens
